“Masculinity can be a cult,” Crews explained. “And when I say ‘cult,’ it’s no different than David Koresh. It’s no different than Jim Jones.”
He went on: This is what happens with men and women. […] As a woman, they talk, but a guy is not looking at you as even all the way human. This is what you have to understand — there is a humanity issue here,” he continued. “[Women are] like, ‘Why don’t you hear me? Why don’t you see my feelings?’ And [men are] like, ‘But you’re not all the way human. You’re here for me, you’re here for my deal.’ It’s real.
This doesn’t mean men see women as lizard people or something, it’s referencing women’s humanity and how little many men connect with that in favor of viewing women as entities put here to please and serve them rather than as people with equal interior lives, thoughts of their own, etc.
Marital rape and wife beating would never have been legal if women were viewed as equal in their humanity. Instead, we come out of history of coverture, where women had no legal status. First they were “covered” by their father and had his last name and then they were covered by their husbands (taking his last name). Women couldn’t make contracts or own property — because they weren’t really People — they were a type of chattel — the same way that the humanity of Black slaves was not recognized. You were Mrs. Steven Smith because your name and identity were irrelevant — because you’re not really a Person. We’re not that far removed from that sort of thinking. Lots of golf clubs and such still refer to women that way.
Edit: Here’s an idea — when you come across someone from a marginalized group talking about their experiences in this culture (and particularly when lots of people from that group say the same thing), if it doesn’t really make sense to you, rather than assuming they are wrong about their own lives, how about you ask them for more information or to explain what they mean? Because assuming you know better than they do is kind of the dictionary definition of condescending.
