No, just the past 6-9 thousand years with the advent of patriarchy. Before that time the role for men was a lot more cooperative, authentic, intuitive, etc. Women "provided" just as much as men did and we had a largely egalitarian social structure where everyone taking care of and looking out for the whole tribe or community was the primary survival strategy.

The good news of that is that what you are asking men to do is not something they have never done before. They just haven't done it much recently, but it's not against their nature or anything.
