Now there's an idea that we can both agree about! I was just about to write something along those lines sparked by this discussion. Men are messaged by the culture that they ought to be dominant, which includes initiating contact with women, going after what they want, be in control, and to some extent, treat women as prey.

Confident is good, but not like that...

If instead, there was more early (and ongoing) messaging around looking at women as fellow human beings and not prey or someone to dominate or acquire that would go a long way. Add in better fluency with difficult emotions and how to manage them for everyone, and we'd have a much nice culture. In Denmark, they actually teach empathy in schools and enourage kids to compete against their own past performance rather than to compete with their peers. It builds a stronger social system and those skills are considered vital to being an effective manager and business person - which of course, they are. We would definitely do better if we did that - but there are a huge number of men who are already complaining about the "feminization" of the culture despite the fact that it's really just allowing men to be full human beings, I don't see that kind of thing being mainstream any time soon.

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
