One of the central elements of a patriarchal dominance hierarchy is to always be comparing yourself to those around you to see if you rank higher or lower than them on the hierarchy — there can be no actual peers. Why else would you care if someone else had a nicer car than you or if someone you didn’t even know was fat? This constant comparison and ranking drives consumer culture, so it keeps getting encouraged and cultivated.
