Pablo, I think that really looking deep into someone’s eyes can help, but if you aren’t opening yourself up to really see them, and want to still turn them into who you’d like them to be, I think that’s what you will see instead. And yes, you are right, people don’t really look deeply into each other’s eyes very much. I think it has to do with vulnerability, which is something that we are taught in the West is a weakness, even though it’s needed for any kind of real connection or even any kind of courageous act.

I think in some ways it takes a certain amount of self-confidence and self-understanding to look at someone and just let them be who they are, and then to go on and really appreciate that, rather than needing to fix them or change them in some way. Maybe that is a part of the problem also.
