Probably because you aren't on the receiving end of other people's (mens) hostility on a daily basis like I am and like most women on the internet are.

Dancova's allowing for "opinions on both sides" is empty lip service to civility and moderation. It's as if segregation has just been reinstated and we're being told that those of us who are up in arms about that are out of line. It's a very similar roll back of fundamental civil and human rights. There are people out there who self-segregate just as there are people out there who don't want to have abortions, but both of those things are completely and entirely different than people who want to make laws around that for others which impact their mental, emotional, and physical health as well as their financial and economic prospects and the wellbeing of any forced-birth children. People are welcome to their views, but they are not welcome to foist those on me and I will squawk if they try (as will many others) - which is only appropriate. If your civil and human rights were being curtailed, you'd be squawking too.

Yes, not every person who doesn't believe in abortion is a monster who wants to keep women in their place, but just about every person who is in favor of making these draconian laws is - demonstrably so. His callous disregard for just how painful and dehumanizing it is to have your civil rights stripped of you in this way is a lot more of a problem in my mind then how the rhetoric of the distraught might turn off someone who is on the fence - something that as far as we can tell, isn't of any discernable impact.

Edit: What influences politicians often has little to do with what is right or wrong or how they actually feel about an issue and more to do with the horse-trading that is part and parcel of American politics. Joe Manchin just agreed to support the climate/economic bill because he got the concessions he wanted for pipelines (a major contributor to his campaigns). Whether somebody’s rhetoric for or against that bill was strident undoubtedly had no impact on him voting the way that he did.

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
