Refusing to acknowledge real social dynamics that lead to disfunction is somewhere between naive and intentionally ignorant. The American Psychological association released new guidelines for working with men and boys based on 40 years of research that essentially says the same things. When men are socialized into "traditional" masculinity (something most guys are to some extent) it encourages viewing masculinity as largely achieved through conquest and dominance, as well as control of women. This is not only harmful to women and to society at large, it's terribly harmful to men. This doesn’t all men are a monolith are internalize these norms to the same extent, but it is a very real, and very problematic dynamic that absolutely has an impact on the way that women are too often treated.
If you can't be bothered to care about women and society, at least care how this toxic shits drives isolation, substance abuse, depression, and suicide in men and be an active part in shifting those norms for the betterment of us all. This is all mainstream sociology. There are actual generalizations that can be made. We'll never have an end to the "gender wars" until guys like you stop with your nonsense and help us fix the culture.
“Though men benefit from patriarchy, they are also impinged upon by patriarchy,” says Ronald F. Levant, EdD, a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Akron and co-editor of the APA volume “The Psychology of Men and Masculinities.” Levant was APA president in 2005 when the guideline-drafting process began and was instrumental in securing funding and support to get the process started.
The main thrust of the subsequent research is that traditional masculinity—marked by stoicism, competitiveness, dominance and aggression—is, on the whole, harmful. Men socialized in this way are less likely to engage in healthy behaviors."
Masculinity is not the same thing as men. It’s a cultural construct that is different in different places in the world and at different times in history. Pointing out that problems with what we have in our part of the world is the first step toward actually having a less violent, less domination-oriented society — something that would benefit everyone.
