Being a TERF means you not only subscribe to something that is ascientific, you do so in an aggressive and mariginalizing way that has a negative impact on real people's lives. It's essentially a hate group.
In general, I love Chapelle, but he went too far this time. Besides proudly proclaiming himself "team TERF" he completely failed to recognize that a lot of LGBTQ people are Black, and that even the white ones still face considerable discrimination and oppression. When he said, "I'm with the Stonewall gays" he completely neglected to recognize that most of the leaders of that uprising where Black and trans.
As the great Terry Pratchett once said, "Satire is meant to ridicule power. If you are laughing at people who are hurting, it's not satire, it's bullying." The brutilization and murder of trans people is rampant. It's not funny to pretend that's not a real issue and to set yourself up in competition about who is actually more oppressed - particularly when you opened the set by talking about how rich and famous you are and completely refusing to acknowledge the intersection of Blacks who are also "the alphabet people." It's ignorant, and I think that people have a right to complain about someone with a large platform spewing ignorant shit.
You said that the bit wasn't that trans people are freaks, but why then did he make so many analogies to trans women not having "real" vaginas, but instead having ones analagous to fake meat? I watched the special and it really wasn't all that funny - plus it was pretty disturbing in more than a few places.
It doesn't matter whether he proclaims that he doesn't have a problem with trans people - he said things that further justify their marginalization which puts their lives in jeopardy and contributes to the worsening of their already precarious lives. That's what matters. It's irresponsible and it's not funny. I frankly don't care if he ever apolgogizes, but I'm not watching any more of his shows unless he gets some new material, because this shit is tired already and he should use his substantial talents somewhere more insightful and entertaining. I know he said he's not doing any more shows, but it he ever does....
