Several years ago I told my partner that I didn't want to be his wife any longer for all the reasons that you've named. It took some adjustment and time, and a few rounds of "You seem to believe I'm your fucking wife" before we finally settled into something that works for us both. I refer to him as my husband at times now but it's because those words are no longer loaded with societal expectations for us like they were when we first started using them.
