She's such a sunny soul - I think she thought she could change him. Plus, after 25 years of working on her career and not really having a real boyfriend in all that time (she worked on Wall Street) she just really, really wanted someone to love her. He told her she was the love of his life and that he'd never gotten over her, and so yes, she settled in order to have that.

That makes me sad, but also angry that as smart and attractive and outgoing as she is she couldn't find a partner in NYC so she settled for this bozo. So many men are still threatened by a strong, competent woman doing a "man's job" and making a lot of money doing it. That's what makes this situation such a cluster. She has 25 years of evidence that she did have to settle and so it's not so easy to say, "You shouldn't take this, it's not healthy, go find someone else." Sigh...
