Small boxes of acceptable roles for each gender can't help but be constricting to many people, and as you noted, they took a toll on your Italian beau. My take-away from this story is that American dating has gotten transactional and selfish and that any culture where partners make an effort to care for, listen to and be good to each other is the real example to emulate.
