Sorry I'm just now seeing this, but I'd say that monotheism cemented and codified the shift towards patriarchy which arose around the time of the advent of agriculture. Nearly all religions prior to this time have balance between male and female. Goddesses have consorts, and even male-dominated pantheons like the Greeks still have goddesses and wives of the gods. Abrahmic religions envision god as the creator, with no consort - removing creation from female purview and devising the perfect system for relegating women to the shadows under the rule of fathers and husbands under guise of it being "what god wants."
