Stratified societies started about 6–9 thousand years ago, varying of course, around the world. It’s been generally linked to the advent of agriculture where for the first time people had real individual property (land, cattle, etc.) that they wanted to pass on to their own heirs and not share with the group. This is when patriarchy arises too — signaling not just the control of women in order to assure paternity of heirs, but also more general class stratifications. It’s also related to invasions/assimilations by northern peoples that already had a more male and war-centered culture.
