Such a good point - this type of behavior would be maladaptive, which means that it would have died out evolutionarily. Plus, until 6 or 7 k years ago, humans lived in close-knit groups where women's kin was all around them. If men behaved badly towards them, their brothers, fathers, mothers, aunts, etc., would have intervened.

Maybe a story idea in here though.
