Sure, everything is the fault of women who are horrified and fed up with misogyny. 🙄 Blaming the victims is always a good look…

We live in a dominance hierarchy culture - a patriarchal dominance hierarchy. Of course, boys believe they have the right to be the dominant ones in society because just 50 years ago that was mainstream belief. In addition, it's a zero-sum construct, where if you don't win you lose. A ton of people see equality as losing something. This isn't actually in dispute. Sexual harassment is an attempt to try to get women to "go back where they belong" and stop trying to compete with men in the office or the construction site. And that's only one manifestation of the belief that there's a pyramid and if you aren't fighting to get to the top of it, you'll be on the bottom.

The American Psychological Association issued new guidelines not that long ago in an attempt to better serve men and boys.

"The main thrust of the subsequent research is that traditional masculinity—marked by stoicism, competitiveness, dominance and aggression—is, on the whole, harmful. Men socialized in this way are less likely to engage in healthy behaviors."

Those guidelines come out of 40 years of research - most of it done by men. The feelings of entitlement to unearned privilege is not usually a conscious one, but that doesn't mean it's not extremely insidiously part of the culture.

And no, it's not alright for boys to challenge the belief that women should have equal rights and opportunities, should be treated with basic common decency and respect, and shouldn't be treated like prey by way too many men — as well as a culture that turns a blind eye to that (when it’s not actively encouraging it). Women shouldn't have to tolerate getting sexually harassed beginning at age 9 or 10, getting groped while helping to perform surgery, having their authority questioned simply for being female, living in a rape culture, etc., etc., etc.

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
