I've wanted to write something for a while (and maybe now I will) about how the dominance hierarchy aspects of patriarchy engender a lot of insecurity, particularly in men, who must always evaluate themselves against everyone around them for status and position in the pecking order. Combine that with a bit of unconscious objectification of women as having all the loving qualities of a mother, but plus, you get to have sex with her - and I can definitely see how it might lead to dysfunction.
I heartily agree that we ought to be teaching children how to ascertain and grapple with real life problems such as these so that we can all do better in treating each other kindly and with respect.
