Thanks, Dave for your comment. Getting older is not for the faint of heart, that’s for sure. Part of my mom’s rationale is that I already have my hands full, but she doesn’t seem to comprehend that it would actually be a whole lot easier and less stressful on me to have her nearby or if she must stay where she is to at least be someplace where there is always help available if she needs it.
I have a friend who was in a similar position, except that her mom was actually progressing into Alzheimer's. She came for a visit (that she was never intended to go home from) and somewhat mercifully had a not too serious fall and had to go in for care for that. It made the transition into more permanent care a lot easier to accomplish. Part of me hopes that my mom will be similarly forced to make the move from the medical rehab wing to the living wing of the place she’s in. I guess we shall see.
My mother-in-law pretty much sleeps or lays in bed 20 hours a day at her assisted living place even though she is still capable of walking and getting around by herself. That isn’t a life. I pray that I never get to that stage.
