Thanks for clarifying and I agree but in this long discussion got distracted by your slightly different choice of words.

I do agree that will is exerted in concert and often in response to environment, but not in such a simplistic way. Otherwise, how do we explain that for the first 5k years of agriculture, even cultures with ostensible hierarchy and even kings, remained largely egalitarian and autonomous from the power of the hierarchy? It was only after thousands of years of essentially the same environmental conditions that the social structures began to shift more towards dominance hierarchies. We can speculate as to why that happened but don't necessarily know for sure.

I also think it's a bit over simplistic to say that any two crowds will be a lot alike - but that's a side issue, and I don't want to go off on a tangent here.
