I've studied German for some time and have often wondered how all these genderized nouns work in an increasingly non-binary world. If you don't consider yourself a Lehrer or a Lehrerin, then what is someone to do when describing their job? And I didn't realize that about nouns that "do something" until you mentioned it. Yes, sexist indeed.
