Thanks. I've read a bit about his before - I think also from Malcolm Gladwell, if I'm remembering correctly, but I'm looking forward to checking out this paper as well.

I certainly don't deny that policing is a dangerous job. But if over 90% of the people shot by the police are unarmed and only 5% of policing is dealing with violent crimes, then something is off about the way that they are trained to assess risk. It's something I hope to delve into more at some point. I wish I could get my partner to engage about this stuff, but he really doesn't want to. I think he feels that as an outsider I can never truly understand what it's like to be a police officer, which in some respects is true, and he's reluctant to be critical of his profession to an outsider even where he recognizes problems.
