That's certainly one way to look at it, but in most religions, the deity is viewed as a place of succor and healing. This is just a much more literal way to commune with the deity directly to obtain that. Pretty much throughout ancient Mesopotamia the Queen of Heaven was both goddess of love/sex but also war/justice/political power. She was the balance between the human and the sacred. She wasn't just an Earth Mother Goddess. I don't know that superimposing modern social dynamics on top of that really gives a true look at the past - although you are naturally entitled to your opinion.
