That's completely and totally wrong. Women have only had inequality for the past 6-9 thousand years (with the rise of patriarchy), and do you really think you need to bring that to my attention as if I wasn't already well aware of that?

You're the one who brought up the Civil War - not me. I was simply pointing out how that's not a good example of the point you were trying to make.

The relevance of the overpredominance of men in all levels of media is (as I've already clearly said) that it demonstrates that white men (and men in general) are still considered as the normative US citizen. Everyone else is an other.

I'm not disputing that change takes time. I simply was pointing out that we have a long, long, long way to go, in part because in some quarters change has stalled and you and the penguin were trying to minimize that. A platitude like "opportunity is there" is unbelievably clueless and condescending. It completely fails to take into account how much harder women and racial minorities have to work to get the same opportunities -something that is all well documented. Did you even read the article I linked about how in just about every major metric of power there are more men named John than there are women?

Sure, Obama was president. Nancy Pilosi is the Speaker. This doesn't negate how many artificial barriers to equality are still in existence - all of which are readily quantifiable. Don't be an ass by acting like discrimination is a figment of our imaginations. Culture (aka patriarchy) does indeed influence all sorts of things. Two-thirds of mothers work outside the home and no, it's not their choice to still have to go home and do the vast bulk of home, child, and elder care on top of that - something else that is very well documented. Do you have the first clue how many work cultures freeze women with children out by holding informal meetings late in the day after they have had to go home? Why don't you educate yourself before you speak about things that you clearly know nothing about.

Have you ever listened to any of the personal experiences of women who have tried to make a living in the trades? You ought to try it sometime. They are not exactly welcomed with open arms, even now. Have you any idea how many women (and minorities) leave STEM careers due to the pervasive discrimination they face? A huge amount!

Since you are so intent on proving the aphorism that the less someone knows the more sure they are that they are right, I'm officially done with this conversation.

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
