The belief that men and women are fundamentally different animals is another one of those blocks to him being an actual feminist. Men do tend to have more spontaneous desire and women tend to have more responsive desire - but it's not a straight binary that is always in effect and we also don't know how much of that is cultural.

For me, one of the core aspects of intelligence is curiosity - and you'd think someone with a Ph.D. would have a bit more of that, as well as an understanding that how something looks initially on the outside may well be a lot more nuanced and complex once you investigate it.
