The cause of all of this stuff is patriarchy - a social system that imagines masculinity is performed and demonstrated in large part by having dominance and power over other people. If one isn't actively challenging that, one is upholding it.

I’m glad to hear that you are involved in some organizations that do that. We need more men to do the same, but also to understand that “men” indicates the pervasive culture of masculinity and the culture it entails. It doesn’t literally mean every individual man.

There are cultures around the world where rape essentially doesn't exist - in part because they don't have this same sort of dominance-hierarchy social system and there is a fundamental respect for women that doesn't exist in our culture.

Scully’s (1990) study of sexual violence views rape as learned behavior within a patriarchal culture. According to her findings rapists as compared to other felons are more likely to believe in a double standard regarding gender roles and they identify more strongly with the traditional male role.

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
