The Democrats not just lost but were trounced because they assumed that only deplorables would vote for Trump. That sort of condescension is what got us here - where people who are not MAGAs, not misogynists, not homophobes, not obsessed with maintaining their privilege still voted that way.

The point of this piece is not to be gracious to Trump voters. It's to point out that we are in for a lot more of the same if we keep making assumptions about people's motivations rather than actually delving into the needs of the electorate and attempting to meet those.
