The problem isn't young women's not-as-yet fully developed brains, the problem is that culture exerts way more influence than most people (and most penguins) want to admit. Only about 2% of thought is conscious, according to cognitive scientists. The rest is the influence of culture, childhood indoctrinations, media, and other inputs that are deep in our subconscious and that run a lot of us like puppets. The notion that we are somehow truly at the helm of our lives and are "rational" people is mostly a concept left over from the 19th century - one which has been debunked by modern science.

I agree that if women are silly enough to date a guy who will cut them loose simply for turning 25, that is their mistake to make, but they are making that choice having been essentially groomed by a patriarchal, youth-obsessed culture. Some people are self-aware enough to notice that and decide what to do in the face of it and others aren't. All are responsible for their own lives, but it's not out of line to note the influences that may well be very much in play.

In any case, I hope these Iranian women will prevail and change their culture to a freer and more open one where they have more control over their own lives.

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
