There are a lot of them, but yeah, for a large number of Americans, this one is a biggie. A very progressive gay friend told me in another comment that he used to believe this - because he'd read it in serious books, and heard it from serious people. Eventually, he learned better, but it took a long time. And it's still put forward as the truth by some people. 🙄
