There was no significant anti-abortion movement in the US (except amongst Catholics) until Nixon hit upon it as a way to galvanize socially conservative voters in order to get elected. In other words, it was a political tool, more than a moral one. Prior to the 1970s, it was not an issue with a strict political divide.
