There's a difference between understanding why someone might feel as they do, and putting all the sympathy on the side of someone who has reprehensible views. Of course we should feel empathy for this guy, but people of conscience should also distance themselves from those statements - rather than highlighting them - giving the impression that he thinks it's reasonable to have a pathological hatred of women and to view them as evil.
People who are perpetuating hate need to be called out on that, even if we also feel sorry them as well. I've already been called a bigot for saying that. Apparently professing hate for women is fine by some.
