This, for me, was one of the greatest gifts of polyamory - to begin to understand myself to be an individual having deep connections with others and not just one half of a "two become one" whole. It was incredibly transformative, and I think you are correct that it's what can allow someone to feel both compersion and jealousy at the same time.
