This is a function of patriarchy. It may be true, but only for the past 6k years or so where female beauty is their single most important asset (unless very rich) and since you (now) only get one mate and there's no more communal care for the social group, you'd better attract the "best" man you can attract.

For 97% of human history, women were slim and wiry, with such low body fat that they only menstruated 4 times per year. Gatherers provided most of the daily calories - just as they do in many Hunter-Gatherer tribes today. They didn't have time to sit around preening, and making themselves less able to move freely to try to get that "one best guy" to provide for them because they were doing a whole lot of the providing, and had access to a variety of men.

That being said, I love the idea of males putting their best foot forward to find a female that they vibe with rather than attempting to dominate, violate, and control women and then screaming about how unfair it is when they don't appreciate that.

PS - the plastic dinosaur is my favorite "decoration" but all of these bowers are cool.
