This part is toxic too. Measuring yourself against other people or arbitrary metrics of success is so poisonous although it's a mainstay of our culture. It's a function of the dominance hierarchy. We need to try to move toward a culture where people take their self-esteem more from inner metrics. Are they in integrity with their own belief systems? Are they fulfilled and taking good care of both their own needs as well as those they care about? Keeping up with the Joneses drives consumer culture but it's bullshit of the highest order.
