Those are some very good questions. We're certainly deeply attached to dominance hierarchies and violence, but history shows that when thrown into disaster, humans quite often band together and forget all that stratification stuff in favor of helping each other. Sadly, it may take catastrophes for us to truly make the move to more egalitarian societies, but if we would try to do so before then, it would benefit us all.
