Those things are primarily the function of a dominance hierarchy social system - something that did not exist until 6-9 thousand years ago. What would a mobile forager want with a slave? That's something that arises in the latter part of the agricultural revolution. Groups that are organized around a blend of personal autonomy and group welfare, one that would insult the meat of a good hunter to keep him from getting a big head, that raises children in what we would call an indulgent way - that's not the sort of culture that tortures people for fun. That's a dominance hierarchy manifestation.
The freedom to leave one's community knowing you would be accepted in other lands was one of the hallmarks of historical autonomy and we see ample evidence all over the world of gift exchanges intended to foster far-flung friendships. Sounds like it's time for me to put this topic on the list for a future story.
