Times change (thank goodness) and what was acceptable 50 years ago as far as racial stereotyping and blatant misogyny is no longer quite so socially palatable - particularly when the audience is children. I think that's a good thing. If the author himself decided to edit his books to reflect modern sensibilities, would you be OK with that? Have you ever watched edited-for-TV movies? This is a tempest in a teapot. It's not the end of civilization as we know it. The Dahl estate approved this - it didn't come from the censorship police who, as John pointed out, mostly reside in the Texas legislature. This is how actual free speech works - if you don't want to read the edited versions, then don't.

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
