Unfortunately, it's very good for business - which is a huge part of the problem. It drives clicks and views and most companies care about that more than they do the people who are abused. YouTube has a whole algorithm system that steers people to more and more extreme content because it's good for business to get people all riled up and indignant.

There are numerous examples of women journalists who have been attacked in very vicious ways for rather moderate stories - and their publications have done nothing at all because it drove a lot of business and that was the most important thing for them. It's truly shocking the things that one ought to think were illegal but that go on absolutely routinely and without consequences.

Ligue du LOL was the name of a private Facebook group, counting among its members around thirty highly successful, influential young journalists and media professionals. They were said to have used the group to organize campaigns of abuse and online harassment against other social media users (mostly women in journalism as well as feminist and LGBTQ activists and people of color) between 2009 and 2012. At the time, multiple victims tried to report the existence of the group and the severity of the harassment, both to the media and to the employers of those involved, with no success.

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
