Very little of thought is actually conscious, according to cognitive science. But still, part of being an adult (IMO) is working to become more self-aware so that these types of disconnects happen a lot less often.

I think this is exactly what happened to Affleck. His subconscious was informing his words, at times hidden from his conscious mind and all this hurtful stuff came tumbling out which he couldn't quite own up to later because his conscious mind had no ill intentions.
