Victim blaming comes largely out of what is known as the fundamental attribution error where we believe that the bad things that befall others are due to some moral failing of theirs but the bad things that befall us are due to bad luck or someone else's malice. It's a kind of defense mechanism which is exacerbated by the dominance hierarchy aspect of our culture. I've been meaning to write something up about this beyond this story about Trump since it was from several yeas ago, and now, maybe I will.
