We met a couple on vacation recently and in getting to know each other she kind of apologetically joked that she'd "forgotten" to have children, while her husband had one from a previous marriage. I felt terrible that she'd had to develop this deflection no doubt due to other people's judgments of her. I for one don't care a bit - it's their lives and their business. Your ex MIL was WAY out of line.
