What a shame that he was treated that way, but yes, that “what is your wife for” attitude is still really pervasive, even if she has her own career. That’s “extra” even if it really isn’t.

When our son was born, James took two weeks of paternity leave. He was the first and probably only man in his law firm to ever do that, and if he hadn’t been already looking to leave, it almost certainly would have hurt his career/partnership track to have done that.

When some men wonder out loud whether or not we truly still have a patriarchal society, I really just have to sigh, because this stuff is still so much a part of the fabric of our culture.
