What you are aware of it primarily the result of socialization. Women can certainly be highly emotional and some of them are completely at the mercy of their emotions, but because more women have not been socialized to stuff or deny their emotions, there are also more of them who are in better balance than some men. Men may seem rational, but a lot of that is really just being cut off from their emotions, and in that case, they are actually being run by them behind the scenes.

As my husband James pointed out after I wrote this, even Mr. Spock was not actually successful at suppressing his emotions in the way that he wishes to and it was often his more human side that made better decisions.
