When God Was a Woman by Merlin Stone is a well-researched book about all the different cultures around the world where the primary deity was female (although they always have complementary male consorts - unlike Abrahamic religions). It really gives one a different perspective on "God the Father" and how that has influenced gender dynamics in so many cultures.

I am frankly surprised that more women haven't left organized religious but it sure looks like that is the wave of the future.
