Women also have to be more picky in this culture - for safety reasons for one thing. And most of the complaining I see on Medium is high standards for behavior and for how they are treated - not for status or whatever. A lot of women are swearing off dating, not because they can't get so called "high status men" - which most women don't actually care all that much about. I think it's because hook-up culture and apps have ruined the connecting and relating parts of getting with someone, and a lot of women are over that. Some guys are as well.

But yes, men are a lot more picky than the cultural narrative purports -for all sorts of reasons. I've been turned down for sex on more than one occasion as a young and pretty conventionally attractive woman. It's not just about attraction - sometimes a guy is tired, or distracted, or whatever... just not feeling it at that moment. I've been meaning to write something about that for a while.
