Yep, a lot of guys are super upset about this. I don't understand why they care, first of all, but they also know so little about women and the pressures they are under that they don't recognize this phrase as primarily a reaction to thousands of years of women being constantly messaged that they are not actual full adults if they don't have a man. As you said, they really need to get over it.
