Yes, exactly. And I would say we are maybe headed that way with preference for taller men. A lot of women are no longer seeking a provider today, but the preference for tall men continues in part because it reads as powerful in other ways within a social system that values that. For example, men find taller men "attractive" also - the taller candidate typically wins, taller people are more likely to be hired, etc. So, it's a bit reductive to say that women prefer taller men only because they read as providers.

The further problem arises when someone ascribes a current preference for taller men to a social dynamic that did not exist at the time it purportedly "evolved." If humans lived most of our Paleolithic history, not in separate dyads, but in small groups where everyone shares food, and raises children communally, and where women/gatherers bring home most of the calories, then saying that women evolved from that time to prefer a tall man because he seems like a good provider has some serious disconnects in logic.

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
