Yes, I encounter that regularly, even from people who are writing from a progressive and/or feminist perspective. It's one of the reasons that I write about patriarchy as a dominance hierarchy (and not only a gender dynamic) as well as the fact that it's really new. - I really want to get the word out that it hasn't always been this way. I think you and I are really on the same page.
