Yes, it's just so kind of lazy and narcissistic. It's my primary objection to so called evolutionary psychology, which tends to take a look at social dynamics among Western cultures in the past 5k years or so and decides that explains human behavior since the beginning of time.

I really want to write an essay about how this type of Euro-male-centric outlook has skewed our scientific understanding of so many things, but it's going to be pretty labor intensive so I haven't gotten there yet.

And yes to the animals thing as well. We may be genetically quite close to chimps and bonobos but that doesn't mean you can extrapolate human behavior from that. We are very clearly a much different species in a wide variety of ways (as if that needed to be said. 🙄)
