Yes, this is one of the biggest reasons that it’s so vital for women to be able to have control over how many children they have and when. It’s a huge factor in determining their economic/work-life future. But I think the real reason that men think it’s important for them to be a good provider is related to patriarchal norms about what masculinity is supposed to be.

Apparently, around 60% of women are the primary breadwinner in their households. Many of those are single-parent households but in around 38% of heterosexual marriages, the woman is the primary breadwinner. However, some men offset the perceived hit to their masculinity by doing even less housework than men in the relationship where they are the primary earner.
