You certainly aren't alone in having that impression. White America loves to trot MLK out as a kind of soft and "appropriate" way to go about advocacy - but in truth, he was anything but those things.

And, you know I'm all about trying to reach and not just alienate men by screeching at them in rage, but there is also something to be said for telling the hard truth. I'm continually astounded at the misconceptions that so many men seem to have about just about everything related to the reality of women's lives and the state of equality. For example, the UK ranks 20th in The World Economic Forum's gender equity index, and sexual violence against women is quite rampant there - and yet, 50% of young men still think that "feminism has gone too far." That's the sort of misalignment of reality and rhetoric that makes someone want to scream in rage. It really seems to me that a lot of men don't want to know the truth either. They prefer self-serving narratives about how they have somehow been cheated out of their due. I honestly don't know how to reach someone in a productive and cooperative way when they are coming from that place of not wanting to know because then they'd have to do something that they don't really want to do.

I'm asking this as a serious question. How do you get someone to willingly give up a lot of their privilege - particularly when they won't even admit that they have any?

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
