You have provided a shining example of exactly why we need to be talking about unconscious bias. And it doesn't matter what term you use, privilege or advantage, it's pretty undeniable (unless one is self-deluded) that different qualities confer unearned advantages in this culture. Race isn't the only one, but it is a huge one, and the fact that you actually believe that most situations are race neutral speaks to just how much we need to be having this discussion. The advantages that you experience as I'm going to presume, an able-bodied, heterosexual, white man are so ubiquitous to you that you don't even understand them as privilege. You think it's just the way it is for everyone, but it isn't. I made that presumption based on your lack of understanding that someone without that background would be much more likely to have.

If want to get a better understanding of what sort of advantages you experience that many others don't, not just by race, by for other reasons, read this story.

It doesn't mean one has no problems or struggles. Economic disadvantage is very real and deserves to be treated seriously, but that too is not the only sort of disadvantage, and at least it's not an immutable trait such as gender, race, or sexuality. Unlike most disability, being poor can be recovered from with some luck and hard work.

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
